Ebook About Singapore to Montreal. 275 days. 23 countries. Three continents and an ocean. More than 20,000 kilometres. A journey of a lifetime. Is it possible to travel from Singapore to Canada without flights? In a bid to find out, intrepid 20-year-old traveller Ganesha Balakrishnan embarked on a life-changing quest that saw him hitchhiking across deserts and steppes, sleeping on the couches of strangers, camping on snow-capped hills, city parks and beaches, and sailing across the Atlantic on a cargo ship all while armed with just a 60-litre backpack and a mettlesome attitude. The Long Direction isn’t a mere travel memoir but a historical, social and cultural commentary on the numerous countries Balakrishnan visited, a recount of spine-tingling – and sometimes life-threatening – experiences and a compilation of life stories of the people he met along the way. Whether writing about back alleyways of ancient cities, being stalked by the secret police, or having romantic encounters in lands where same-sex relationships are both illegal and taboo, Ganesha Balakrishnan gives a thrilling account of what’s it like to leave everything behind and take the road less travelled.Book The Long Direction: A flightless journey from Singapore to Canada Review :
One of my favourite books. I devoured it within 3 days and I’m normally a very slow reader!20-year-old Ganesha Balakrishnan set foot (literally) to travel the impossible - a flightless journey from Singapore to Canada within nine months. His intrepid travels from Southeast Asia to undiscovered countries such as the “stans”, Iran and even North Korea were insightful and vivid. It felt as if I was backpacking alongside him the entire time where he couchsurfed, hitchhiked and even pitched a tent overnight on the Great Wall of China in the freezing cold during winter. One of his travel highlights to Turkmenistan captured my attention where Ganesha managed to be granted the rare and elusive 5-day transit visa. It was really intriguing as to how this hermit nation is even more reclusive than North Korea where it has a strict dictatorship and only allows very few foreigners to enter the country. The streets of Ashgabat, the main capital of Turkmenistan, are paved in marble and gold and vestigates of their ex-president Saparmurat Niyazov, who was infamous for his cult-like personality and eccentric policies, still endures till today. This publication by Ganesha was rather timely as well as COVID-19 has snatched away any opportunities for travel and reading about Ganesha’s travels made me feel as if I was vicariously travelling through him. I definitely lost track of time reading it throughout so thank you for writing this and congrats on being probably the first Singaporean to accomplish this feat. ☺️5 out of 5 stars ⭐️ Very enjoyable read. Ganesh writes very well and this books is a must for anyone who is curious about offbeat road trips. I was most impressed with his attitude towards hitchhiking which is something most people, especially Asians, would be less inclined to do (esp over 8 months!). Hope you keep traveling and share with the world.
